REDHEAD artist Kerri Smith expresses her affection for Newcastle through art.

She paints Newcastle icons such as the Obelisk, Christ Church Cathedral, Fort Scratchley and Redhead shark tower.

Her paintings have whimsical and dreamlike qualities that capture a Novocastrian essence.

‘‘I don’t like to paint what I see, it’s more about how I feel,’’ Ms Smith said.

Jessica Bergmann, who opened Redhead’s Truevision Studio Gallery with husband Frank, said there were many local artists whose art was ‘‘hiding in their homes’’.

Her gallery gave such art an audience and a  sales opportunity – Ms Smith has reportedly sold well since the exhibition opened.

‘‘People really relate to her Newcastle themes,’’ Ms Bergmann said.

‘‘Her paintings are bright, colourful and uplifting.’’

Ms Smith writes a blog about art in Newcastle’s small galleries.

‘‘My primary objective is to get the people of Newcastle to come to local galleries,’’ she said.

‘‘We have an abundance of talented artists selling their art at great prices, but boring prints from Target and Freedom remain on people’s walls.’’

Ms Smith blogs at kerrismithartist.wordpress .com.

Truevision Studio Gallery, at 111 Cowlishaw Street, is open from 10am to 2pm Wednesday to Friday and 10am to 1pm Saturdays.
